The first and far most important step to creating a life you absolutely love is to fall in love with yourself! When we practice self-love, self-nurture and self-care – we begin to accept and embrace all of who we are and that my friends, is where the magic starts to happen. Self-love unleashes our true selves and gives us the confidence we need to share our gifts with the world and to live a life with intention and purpose. This all begins with the decision to infuse yourself with love. Yes, it’s that simple. Just make the conscious decision to love and accept yourself fully and unconditionally.
“The more you give to yourself, the more love you have to give to others and the more value you can add to the world.”
… So, do yourself, your loved ones, and your future a favor and do whatever it is that makes you happy and feel absolutely amazing! Here, I’m sharing some of the lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey about self-love that have completely transformed my life and have become a huge part of my day to day routine!
1. Embrace Change.
There is actually a neurological reason why change is so hard for each and everyone of us: your brain! Your brain is actually programmed and designed to stop you from changing. I know, right? How can such a complex organ, that is powerful beyond measure, not want to embrace change – for our best interest?
“One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up, instead of what they have to gain.” – Rick Godwin
Breaking a habit or making a change requires you to do things that are uncertain, scary or new and well, your brain is designed to protect you from doing things that are uncertain, scary and new. Your brain will immediately go to work to stop you from making a change by making you over think or second guess your decision.
Determination. Persistence. Action.
These 3 key words are exactly what you need to focus on to become the kind of person that you want to be. When you want to make a change, make the decision and stick with it. There is no better time than right now to start new habits and set goals.
2. Establish a Morning Routine
If you want to change your life, start by changing your day. It’s the little habits repeated over time that will be the difference between failure and success. By living with intention and establishing a morning routine – you will live much happier and less stressed.
Your morning routine is what you do from the moment you wake up until the moment you start your work for the day such as: making your bed, having a cup of coffee, working out or going on a run and checking social media. Right now, you may or may not intentionally plan your morning routine, but one way or another you have one.
Steps to Creating A Morning Routine
- Write down what your ideal morning would look like during the week.
- Ask yourself questions like, want do you want to use this time for? Spiritual growth, personal development, rest and relaxation, health and wellness (it can be anything you want it to be)…
- Think hard about what you want out of this time. What habits can you put in place that would make you happy to have done them?
- Do it. Whether it is waking up early enough to accomplish these tasks or re-arranging the morning schedule you already have – make it happen.
3. Skin Care
I cannot stress this enough, skin care is so important and super essential for your overall health & well being. Skin is your body’s largest organ. It serves as a protective barrier between your insides and the rest of the world, helps regulate body temperature and acts as a filter. Skin exists in a constant state of growth, with old cells dying as new cells are forming. It holds body fluids in, preventing dehydration, and keeps harmful bacteria out. It’s affected by every aspect of your life – from what you eat to where you live.
Skin is constantly growing and changing, so you have to continually care for it. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and maintain a balanced diet to provide the vitamins and minerals your skin needs.

4. Nourish Your Body!
Fall in love with yourself – mind, body and spirit!
Drink lots of water, take bubble baths, treat yourself to a massage or acupuncture session, go for a nice walk in nature and most importantly eat well!
Eating well is a form of self-respect. Look up healthy recipes online (I use Pinterest for many ideas!) and become consciously aware of what you are ingesting day to day. Educate yourself on the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs to live a long and healthy life.
Eating healthy increases productivity, reduces if not eliminates the amount of times you are sick throughout the year (which is hindsight saves money on medication and pharmaceutical drugs.. yuk!) it enhances mood, regulates weight and is a main contributor to living a long and happy life.
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without” – Buddha
Meditation encompasses techniques that induce relaxation, cultivate internal energy, develop compassion and encourage forgiveness. It clears the mind and promotes awareness.Meditation helps lower blood pressure, eases tension-induced pain, boost serotonin production and increases energy levels. It helps ease anxiety, builds emotional stability, boosts creativity and induces a sense of happiness.
I usually before a nap or during a bubble bath. I use an app called “Meditation game” by a company called Being. It has the most peaceful soundtracks that stimulate your mind and promote deep relaxation, this is especially good for beginners 🙂
6. Get Moving!
Dance, run, walk, swim, lift, jump, hike, bike, spin and my personal favourite, yoga!
Yoga… *daydreams* *smiles* *happy sigh*
Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that unites breath control with meditation and physical movement. Yoga has so many unbelievable benefits. It strengthens the body, helps relax our mind, improves flexibility, helps burn off excess fat, helps build and maintain mental focus, improves blood circulation, improves the functions of our internal organs, improves muscle tone, improves posture and helps cope with insomnia … need I say more? #Yogaeverydamnday
We all know the joys and benefits that exercise had to offer – so get moving!
7. Educate Your Mind
Your life will become more fulfilling when you educate your mind. You’ll make deeper connections, discover new interests and become more equipped to reach your goals. The internet is filled with free learning resources! Dedicate time to research topics that interest you. I personally love watching Ted Talks!
Another thing that I love to do in my spare time is read!! I’ll grab myself a coffee, head over to Chapters and spend hours and hours going through books, making myself a pile of what I want to bring home with me. By readings a diverse range of both fiction and non-fiction, you are exploring new worlds and ideas that will help shape you into the beautiful human being you are meant to be.
“You cannot open a book without learning something” -Confucius
8. Practice Forgiveness
We are SO incredibly hard on ourselves these days… We have to come to the realization that we’re human and we all make mistakes, even the people that we love. We live and we learn. Fail, but fail forward. Practising self-love means to not dwell on those mistakes. Acknowledge them, learn from them, and move the hell on! Life is too precious to be living in the past. Live in the moment and for the future.
Forgiving others is also huge for our well being! Holding onto anger and resentment only harms you, not the other person. Let it go – not for them but for you. Forgiving others is really a gift for yourself and honey, you’re so worth it!
You are exactly where you are meant to be right now. There is a divine timing for everything. It’s not a competition. Let it hurt. Let it heal. Let it go.
9. Breathe Deeply
In today’s society, we become so accustomed to a on-the-go mentality, that we find it difficult to relax, be still and enjoy the moment. Little do we know that slowing down is essential for living a joyful, fulfilling and successful life!
Taking time to breathe and relax doesn’t take time away, it actually creates more of it!
Chest breathing is ingrained in us by society and our busy lives but this practice isn’t normal or beneficial to us. Deep abdominal breathing is more ideal as it soothes the heart beat, keeps us calm and stabilizes blood pressure. You can do this anytime and anywhere.
Find a peaceful place to sit or lie down. Take a normal breath. Take a deep breath by inhaling slowly through your nose until your chest and belly rise with your lungs. Release your breath slowly through your mouth or nose, whatever feels most natural.
10. Follow Your Heart
Following your heart means to believe in yourself, to follow your dreams and then taking the action to get yourself there. Learning how to love yourself more is all about not allowing fear and self-doubt to hold you back from the things you want most in life. Tapping into your inner desires and allowing your heart and intuition to lead the way is the self-love path to success. Be brave. Take those baby steps every day that will align you with the life you truly want to live.
Do something today that your future self will thank you for.
