Gerhard Leupelt is a long-time veteran of the food industry here on the Island, and is currently working (along with his time at GP’s) at Camosun College in Victoria, BC as an instructional assistant in Hospitality. Camosun College is where he met Phil Cho (part owner of GP’s), who is also working in hospitality industry at the Empress Hotel.
One day, Phil suggested to Gerhard that the concept of the donair differed on each side of the Canadian Rockies. On the West side, the donair has commonly been imagined as the gyros — a Greek style pita with tzatziki sauce. On the East side, people are more familiar with the Halifax style — meat with a sweet sauce. They thought it would be a brilliant idea to open their very own donair and pizza shop where the East side Mediterranean style met the West side Greek style. Gerhard Leupelt describes their product as the ultimate hybrid.
GP’s uses top quality ingredients from local farms and markets, including fresh vegetables from their own garden! They support local farmers like Silverdale Farms with their grilled corn and in house made seasoned butter, yum! GP’s also has a Mexican, vegetarian and Hawaiian donair. They also serve great pizza, ice cream and milkshakes.
Local customers say that GP’s is a true neighborhood pizza & donair shop where the whole family can go to enjoy a fresh and delicious homemade meal.
